Gaining Traction Toward God-Given Success

Walking in Alignment with God

Success—it’s a word we all chase. But let’s be real: sometimes what we call “success” is just the next paycheck, the promotion, or the clout on social media. In God’s eyes, success looks different. It’s not just the goal; it’s the journey of becoming the person He created us to be. Before we can even gain traction, we have to define success on His terms.

When we pray about our goals, a spiritual shift begins. Prayer isn’t just asking God to bless our dreams—it’s letting Him scan our hearts, exposing what’s real and what’s ego. And that’s where the first big question hits us: Do my desires line up with God’s plan? And more importantly, am I willing to realign them if they don’t?

Think about a car stuck in the mud. You can floor the gas, spin your tires, and get frustrated. But until you let someone guide the wheels and push from behind, you’re not going anywhere. That’s how misaligned desires work—they spin us out until God intervenes to guide our steps.

Psalm 37:4 (NLT) reminds us, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” But delighting in Him means letting Him steer, even when it doesn’t feel like the fastest route.

Understanding the Tension

Tension is uncomfortable, but it’s necessary. When our desires don’t fully align with God’s purpose, we feel that friction. It’s not punishment—it’s preparation.

Think of an athlete lifting heavy weights. The strain is real. The progress doesn’t always feel immediate. But every repetition builds strength. In the same way, God uses tension to develop endurance, shape our character, and prepare us for what we’ve been asking Him for.

James 1:2-3 (NLT) says, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” This is the key: the trials and friction you feel aren’t there to break you—they’re there to build you. Every challenge, every moment of waiting, every “why isn’t this moving?” is God’s way of strengthening your faith and increasing your capacity.

It’s like learning to ride a bike on rough streets—you’re wobbling, scraping your knees, thinking you’re never gonna get it. But every fall, every skid, every moment you think, I can’t do this, is building balance, strength, and control. By the time the road opens wide and smooth, you’re ready to ride without crashing. That tension? That’s traction in disguise.

Partnering with God

Gaining traction toward success isn’t about grinding harder or hustling faster—it’s about partnership. When we align our desires with God, we’re not just chasing a dream; we’re walking with the One who knows exactly how to get us there.

Say for example you’re planting a garden. You put the seeds in the soil, water them, and give them sunlight—but you don’t see results right away. Some days, it feels like nothing is happening. But beneath the surface, growth is already underway.

God works the same way in our lives. He knows the dreams and desires He’s planted in our hearts. He carefully nurtures them, shapes them, and ensures they grow in the right season. The waiting, the tending, and the small adjustments along the way are all part of His process, making sure that when the time comes, the fruit is healthy, abundant, and aligned with His Will.

Proverbs 16:3 (NLT) says, “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” That commitment doesn’t mean you do nothing—it means you move with Him, letting His purpose guide each step.

Carrying the Blessing

Finally, remember that God’s process isn’t just about giving—it’s about preparing you to carry what He gives. Many of us want the blessing but not the growth that comes with it. True traction comes when we embrace the refining process, knowing that every challenge is strengthening us to handle the very thing we’ve asked for.

When God strengthens you through tension, aligns your desires through prayer, and teaches you through the waiting, He’s building your capacity. He’s making sure that when the blessing arrives, it doesn’t overwhelm you—it settles into a life that’s ready to sustain it.

Psalm 1:3 (NLT) reminds us, “They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” When you stay rooted in Him, aligned with His Will, and committed to His process, your life will produce fruit, and it will be steady, strong, and in the right season. ■
