Trusting God to Complete the Work He Began in Us
The Christian life isn’t a hundred-yard dash—it’s a lifelong journey with Jesus Christ. While many people begin their walk with Him full of excitement and expectation, the real challenge isn’t simply starting the race. It’s remaining faithful through every season of life until the very end. There will be days when our faith feels strong and days when we struggle to take the next step. We’ll experience victories that strengthen us and disappointments that test us. Yet God never asked us to run this race alone. He calls us to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ, who not only started our faith but faithfully carries us through every mile until we reach the finish line. As Hebrews 12:1–2 (NLT) reminds us, we are to “run with endurance the race God has set before us” by fixing our eyes on Him.
Joshua understood what it meant to finish well. He had witnessed God’s miraculous power, led battles, endured seasons of waiting, and watched the Lord remain faithful through every challenge Israel faced. By the time he reached the end of his life, Joshua wasn’t relying on yesterday’s victories or someone else’s faith. His heart was settled. That’s why he could boldly declare, “But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD”. Finishing faithfully begins with the same kind of settled commitment. Long before we reach the finish line, we must decide that regardless of what life brings, our hearts belong to the Lord. That decision becomes the anchor that holds us steady when the road grows difficult.
Learning to Walk Faithfully with God
The apostle Paul gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to finish faithfully. His journey with Christ was far from easy. He faced rejection, persecution, imprisonment, suffering, and seasons when the road ahead had to feel overwhelming. Yet through every trial, Paul remained anchored in the One who called him. He wasn’t faithful because he never struggled. He was faithful because he continued surrendering his life to Jesus Christ.
In 2 Timothy 4:7 (NLT), near the end of his journey, Paul could look back with confidence and say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.” What a powerful reminder that finishing well isn’t about having a perfect walk with God. It’s about continuing to trust Him, returning to Him when we stumble, and allowing His grace to carry us through every season. The same God who began a good work in Paul is the same God who is faithfully working in us.
But finishing faithfully doesn’t mean the journey will always be easy. Along the way, every believer will face moments that test their faith, challenge their endurance, and reveal what is happening within their soul. Sometimes the greatest battles aren’t the ones happening around us—they are the ones happening within us. Disappointment, weariness, fear, and discouragement can slowly drain our confidence and make us wonder if continuing is worth it.
But God’s Word reminds us not to give up. Hebrews 10:35–36 (NLT )says, “So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.”
How Do We Keep Going?
Finishing faithfully isn’t about having extraordinary strength or trying harder in our own power. It’s about staying close to Jesus Christ and allowing Him to continue the work He began in us. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit apart from the vine, we cannot grow, endure, or become who God created us to be apart from Him. In John 15:4-5 (NLT), Jesus said, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you… For apart from me you can do nothing.”
We don’t finish this race by depending on yesterday’s victories, our own discipline, or our ability to hold everything together. We finish by abiding in Christ and spending time in His Word. We allow Him to renew our minds. We listen to the Holy Spirit and faithfully take each step He places before us. Day by day, God strengthens us, teaches us, and transforms us as we continue walking with Him.
The beautiful truth is that our Heavenly Father never asks us to complete this journey in our own strength. Philippians 2:13 (NLT) reminds us, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” Even in seasons when we feel weary, uncertain, or discouraged, God is still at work within us. As we remain rooted in Jesus Christ, He provides the strength, wisdom, and grace we need for each day. The same God who called us to run the race is faithful to help us keep going until we reach the finish line.
The Finish Line
One day, every believer will reach the finish line of the race God has given us. Until then, our journey is not about proving ourselves or trying to earn God’s approval. Through Jesus Christ, we are already loved, accepted, and made new. Our calling is to continue walking with Him, trusting Him through every season, and allowing Him to complete the work He began within us.
Jesus reminds us that faithfulness matters. In Matthew 25:21, we hear the words every believer longs to hear: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” That moment will not be about a perfect record or a life without mistakes. It will be about a heart that remained surrendered to God and continued following Him.
So keep going. Keep trusting Jesus Christ. Keep allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you. When you feel tired, remember that you are not running this race alone. The One who called you is faithful, and He will give you everything you need to finish faithfully. ■
