Discover Your Purpose

Finding the life Jesus Christ created you to live

Many people spend years searching for their purpose. They pray about it, wonder about it, and sometimes become frustrated because they feel as though God has not revealed it to them. Yet often the problem is not that we know too little. The problem is that we want more details before we are willing to take the next step. God’s desire has never been to hand us a complete blueprint for our lives. His desire is relationship. Through Jesus Christ, we are invited into a daily walk with God where purpose unfolds as we follow Him. Faith was never meant to operate with all the answers in advance.

Stop Waiting for the Entire Blueprint

One of the greatest misconceptions about purpose is the idea that we cannot begin until we know everything. The truth is that most believers already know enough to get started. We know we are called to follow Jesus. We know we are called to love others. We know we are called to share the Gospel. We know we are called to live in a way that reflects Christ. And we know we are called to surrender our plans and seek God’s direction. Every morning that we are above ground presents us with another opportunity to place our lives before Him and say, “I surrender to Your guidance, Lord. Lead me today.”

We need look no further than the obedience of Abraham to be reminded of this truth. Genesis 12:1 (NLT) says, “The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.’” God did not provide every detail before Abraham started walking. He simply called him to trust and obey. In much the same way, our Heavenly Father often reveals the next step rather than the entire journey. As we walk with Him, our understanding grows, and our faith deepens.

Jesus Christ: Our Example and Destination

Jesus Christ is both our example and our destination. He is the answer to every meaningful question we might ask. He lived in complete dependence upon the Father, and He calls upon us to do the same. Purpose is not only about finding the right career, ministry, or opportunity. It is about becoming more like Christ and allowing Him to work through our lives.

Colossians 1:10 (NLT) reminds us that God’s desire is that we “live in a way that honors and pleases the Lord” and that our lives “produce every kind of good fruit.” A lot of people hear that and immediately think about ministry, accomplishments, or doing something big for God. But much of that fruit shows up in everyday life.

It shows up in how we treat our spouse after a long day. It shows up in how we respond when somebody gets on our last nerve. It shows up when we choose forgiveness instead of holding on to an offense. Sometimes it shows up when God is nudging us to do something that makes us uncomfortable and we decide to obey anyway.

Following God’s Guidance One Step at a Time

The truth is, purpose is not just found in the big moments. A lot of it is worked out in the ordinary parts of life that nobody else sees. The choices we make behind closed doors matter. The way we love people matters. The way we represent Jesus Christ matters. Whether we’re raising a family, encouraging a friend, serving in our church, or sharing our faith with someone who needs hope, God can use every act of obedience to touch the life of another person and bring glory to Himself.

The psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:105 (NLT), “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”  Notice that God’s Word is described as a lamp for our feet. It gives enough light for the next step. God has a way of showing us what we need to know when we need to know it. Most of us would love to see the whole road ahead. We want answers about next year, five years from now, and sometimes even twenty years from now. But that isn’t usually how God works. He teaches us to trust Him one step at a time. He invites us to trust Him today and leave tomorrow in His hands.

Discovering Purpose Through Daily Obedience

Maybe the question isn’t, “What is my purpose?” Maybe the question is, “What has God already shown me that I haven’t done yet?” Many believers are waiting for a new word from God while the last thing He spoke is still untouched. Sometimes, a lack of movement is the issue. The next step isn’t always hidden. Sometimes its sitting right in front of us, waiting for our response.

One of the beautiful things about walking with God is that He doesn’t always show us the whole picture at the beginning. Much of what He has planned for our lives is revealed along the journey. We take a step of faith, then another. We obey what He shows us today, and in time He reveals more. Years later, we can often look back and see how He was connecting people, experiences, lessons, and even disappointments that seemed unrelated at the time. What appeared to be random moments were actually part of His divine leading. The Lord has been directing our steps, preparing us, and leading us in His purpose all along.■
