What Are the Nine Manifestations?
1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (NKJV) provides a comprehensive list of these manifestations: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
1. Word of Wisdom
The Word of Wisdom isn’t just about having head knowledge; it’s about applying divine principles in a way that really makes a difference. This gift helps believers look past the surface and tackle the deeper, often hidden, needs of a situation with God’s insight. It empowers people to offer advice and solutions that align with God’s Will and Word, bringing clarity and direction where there might otherwise be confusion and uncertainty. It enables believers to discern and act according to God’s purposes in various aspects of life.
A vivid example of the Word of Wisdom is found in 1 Kings 3:9 (NLT): “Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” Here, King Solomon asks God for wisdom to lead Israel effectively. This request shows Solomon’s deep understanding of the need for divine insight in leadership and decision-making. In response, God gave Solomon not just the wisdom he sought but also extraordinary understanding and discernment, demonstrating the profound impact of the Word of Wisdom in guiding and governing.
2. Word of Knowledge
The Word of Knowledge refers to a deep understanding or insight into specific facts or truths, often revealing information about God’s Will and purposes. Through the Holy Spirit, it provides a glimpse into the nature of God and His plans, helping believers make informed decisions and take appropriate actions. This isn’t just about knowing facts; it’s about grasping the deep mysteries of God. The Word of Knowledge also equips believers to discern God’s Will and uncover hidden truths about situations or people.
A clear example of the Word of Knowledge is found in Acts 5:1-10 (NLT), where Peter demonstrates this gift. In this account, Peter reveals Ananias and Sapphira’s deceitful actions, even though they had tried to keep them hidden. The passage states, “But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!’” This moment illustrates how the Word of Knowledge can uncover hidden truths and offer insight into situations that might otherwise remain concealed.
3. Faith
The Spirit’s manifestation of faith is a supernatural trust in God’s promises and power, going beyond ordinary faith. It represents a fully persuaded confidence in God’s ability to fulfill His promises and accomplish His Will. This kind of faith involves a strong, unwavering trust that empowers believers to rely on God for the impossible, often resulting in miraculous outcomes.
A powerful example of this kind of faith is Abraham, who believed in God’s promise despite the seemingly impossible circumstances. Romans 4:20-21 (NLT) says, “Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.” Abraham’s faith illustrates how supernatural confidence in God’s promises can lead to extraordinary results.
